Summer 2020 in Italy – why is it worth going this year despite the epidemic?

„I was supposed to go to Italy, but I canceled my reservation and now I regret it.” I read such comments most often in recent weeks. Next to them are the comments of delighted people who went and, despite the middle of summer, spend their time without squeezing through the crowds. The next are comments that „I would like to go, but I still have concerns”. In addition, photos of the Vatican Museums with individual visitors from all over, the Trevi Fountain, which you can easily walk to and take a nice photo without people entering the frame, streets of Venice and Florence empty as in January, and usually crowded to the limit Positano on the Amalfi Coast desperately looking new arrivals. Summer 2020 in Italy is mostly almost empty beaches (even those in resorts), fewer people in hotels, restaurants and monuments. But what about restrictions and prices? What is Italy like now and why is it worth considering as soon as possible whether or not to go there this summer? Last week, I asked people who live permanently in Sicily, the Amalfi Coast, the Basilica, Puglia, Rome, Marche and Lake Garda. In addition, they sent me a lot of photos taken in the last days for this post. I invite you!

Myths and false information about the situation in Italy
A lot has happened in the last few months. Italy has been shut down and Italians grounded in their homes to contain the coronavirus that is spreading to the north of the country. This drastic lockdown in Italy was largely preventive, but the media turned it into a real circus, especially the media in Poland in the initial period. When the diseases started in our country, the Italians seemed to be forgiven, but earlier the hate to this country and people associated with it was flowing in streams, and the real situation in Italy was greatly exaggerated. For what? For one simple reason. Fear and panic sell better. And although today the world has returned to its possible normal functioning as in the time of the epidemic, fear remains in many people completely inadequate to the real threat. The enormity of people planning their holidays in Italy this year have resigned, haunted by false reports about people allegedly dying in the streets or in hospitals so overcrowded that if someone has an accident or sudden illness, not even an ambulance comes and he dies in agony where he fell. That’s not true. Not only that, the really difficult situation took place only in the north of the country, around Bergamo, Brescia and Milan, and not in the whole country. The south of Italy was only slightly affected by the coronavirus. The Province of Trapani in Sicily was announced by WHO free from covid-19 on May 27 (source), while the entire Sicily region is very close to obtaining such a statute. Also remember that Italy was the first country in Europe to be affected by Covid-19. It is unfair to say that they were stupid and we were wise because we took the subject more seriously. They paved the way, we could have acted differently, more reasonably, and learned from their mistakes.

The situation in Italy VS the situation in Poland in summer 2020
Poland has a population of less than 38 million, and Italy over 60 million. Nevertheless, for over a month, the daily number of new diagnosed cases has been higher in Poland. However, this is not the only difference. Italians, after having experienced a drastic restriction of their freedom during the most severe lockdown, are now very conscientiously approaching the restrictions and restrictions. Masks are required in confined public spaces such as shops and public transport. In many places, they do not let them in without a mask at all. Outside (city streets, nature, beaches) there is no requirement to wear masks, but keep a distance. In addition, sanitary restrictions, such as cleaning accommodation places with certified cleaning agents, disinfection of rooms between the check-out of one and the check-in of subsequent customers. In restaurants, tables are placed at greater distances from each other, the same applies to sun loungers on the beaches. Visitors must also complete a self-certificate, in which it is stated, among other things, that you are not sick with covid-19. Such a certificate is kept in the accommodation places for possible inspection by the authorities. The English-language form of the self-certificate is provided below.
